Fatal Medication Errors Increase With Use of Alcohol and Street Drugs

Friday August 8, 2008

This Week’s Medication News
Each week, Dr. Mike highlights the latest news about medications.

Deaths from medication errors due to a combination of prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and alcohol and/or street drugs increased dramatically during the past two decades, according to a recent study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

It is not uncommon for some people to have several prescriptions for pain medications and drugs for the treatment of anxiety or depression. When mixed with over-the-counter sleep aids and some alcohol and/or a recreational drug, the combination could prove to be deadly.

A tip from Dr. Mike: Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about all your medications and use of alcohol and recreational drugs. Your combination of medications may be safe, but don’t risk your life if you are not sure!
