Zyprexa-Diabetes Link ‘Neutralized’ by Eli Lilly Drug Reps, According to Bloomberg.com

Friday August 1, 2008
ALT TEXT

Court documents unsealed in an Alaska lawsuit against Eli Lilly reveal that drug reps promoting the antipsychotic drug Zyprexa (olanzapine) were directed “to neutralize the diabetes/hyperglycemia issue.” Further, according to Bloomberg, a sales instruction sheet distributed to the reps stated, “We will NOT proactively address the diabetes concern. The competition wins if we are distracted into talking about diabetes.”

Zyprexa, one of the best selling drugs in the U.S., is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Zyprexa is known to cause significant weight gain and increased levels of blood sugar. Eli Lilly and the makers of several other medications used to treat schizophrenia, including Abilify (aripiprazole), Risperdal (risperidone), and Seroquel (quetiapine), have added warnings to their prescription labels indicating an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Zyprexa has generated a lot of bad press for Eli Lilly and they still have unresolved Zyprexa settlement claims.
Eli Lilly is ‘reaping the whirlwind’ for aggressive marketing of Zyprexa that has caused suffering and deaths.
Zyprexa is being avoided by doctors they aren’t prescribing it for new patients at all anymore.
